Tatra sits high in the Dandenong Ranges, surrounded by mountain ash and tree ferns. The forest setting alone makes for extraordinary photography. Everything else is a bonus.

Tatra Receptions sits near the summit of Mount Dandenong, perched in the Dandenong Ranges with sweeping views across Melbourne. The venue itself is built into the hillside, surrounded by mountain ash, tree ferns, and the kind of filtered green light that makes photographers genuinely excited.
The setting is unlike anywhere else I shoot. The forest paths between the gardens and the reception spaces give you portrait opportunities that feel completely removed from a wedding venue. The glass atrium lets natural light flood the reception space. On a clear day you can see all the way back to the CBD.
What makes Tatra special photographically is the layers. You have the drama of the trees for ceremony and portrait shots, the warmth of the reception interior, and the city view at dusk that frames a couple in a way no flat venue can replicate. Every part of the day looks different, and all of it works.
Location
1 Ridge Rd, Mount Dandenong VIC 3767. Around 45 minutes east of Melbourne CBD.
Ceremony Spaces
Garden gazebo, the forest terrace, or the glass atrium. Multiple options depending on the season and weather.
Portrait Spots
Forest fern gully paths, the mountain ash canopy walks, the view terrace overlooking Melbourne, and the garden lawns. More variety than most venues twice the size.
Light
Dappled forest light through the tree canopy all day. The city view at dusk is exceptional. The atrium floods with warm evening light through the glass.
Season
Every season works differently. The ferns are lush and green year round. Autumn mist in the ranges is something to experience. Summer evenings looking back at the city lights are unforgettable.

HI THERE I’M MATT
The forest light at Tatra
is unlike anywhere else I shoot.
I’m Matt. I’ve been photographing weddings since 2014, mostly across Melbourne and the Dandenong Ranges. Tatra is one of those venues where the environment does a significant amount of the work for you, and I mean that as high praise. The filtered light through the mountain ash canopy creates a natural softbox that flatters every couple.
The fern gully walk between the garden and the reception is one of my favourite portrait spots anywhere in greater Melbourne. Five minutes down that path and you’re completely surrounded by tree ferns, with no hint of a function venue anywhere. The photos from those five minutes are usually the ones couples frame.
My style is mostly documentary. I stay out of your way and let the day happen. During your portrait session I’ll find the best light in the forest, give you some gentle direction, and then step back. By the end of it you’ll have forgotten I was there, which is exactly what I’m going for.
