Nathania Springs sits in Monbulk, deep in the Dandenong Ranges. The moment you turn off the main road and drive in through the tree ferns, it feels like you’ve left Melbourne behind entirely. That sense of being completely surrounded by nature is exactly what makes it so extraordinary to photograph.
The venue is built into a natural gully. Waterfalls run through the property. The ceremony space is a white gazebo nestled among towering ferns and mountain ash, with a canopy so thick that even on a bright day the light is soft, dappled, and diffused. There’s no harsh shadow, no squinting at the sun. Just beautiful natural soft light at every hour.
Reception spaces are warm and intimate, and the garden paths between them give you portrait opportunities that look like something from a fairytale. I’ve photographed couples in the fern gully here and the results genuinely stop people when they see them. It’s that distinct.
Location
Monbulk, in the Dandenong Ranges. Around 45 minutes southeast of Melbourne CBD.

The fern gully here produces
some of my favourite photographs.
I’m Matt. I’ve been photographing weddings since 2014, across Melbourne and the surrounding ranges. Nathania Springs is one of those venues where I always come away with images I’m genuinely proud of, because the setting makes everything easier.
The soft canopy light means you never have to fight the sun. The fern gully path between the gazebo and the reception spaces is one of the best natural portrait settings I know of in greater Melbourne. Five minutes of walking through those tree ferns and couples forget they’re being photographed. That’s exactly when everything happens.
I shoot mostly documentary style, staying out of the way until the portrait session. At Nathania Springs, the portrait session barely needs direction. I just find the best pool of light in the gully, ask you to walk slowly, and let the forest do the rest.
