Chateau Wyuna sits at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges with a heritage-listed 1909 chapel, a waterfall ceremony space, a creek running through the property, and six acres of gardens and forest. It photographs like somewhere much further from the city than it actually is.

Chateau Wyuna is a heritage-listed property in Mount Evelyn, sitting right at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges and the gateway to the Yarra Valley. The centrepiece is a 1909 chapel, intimate and beautifully preserved, with timber walls and the kind of character no modern venue can replicate. A 1920s log cabin serves as the bridal suite. Olinda Creek runs through the property.
The whole place feels like it’s been quietly accumulating charm for a century, because it has.
What makes Chateau Wyuna exceptional to photograph is the sheer variety of the grounds across six acres. The waterfall ceremony space with its footbridge and red carpet. The pergola lawn surrounded by towering trees. The heritage buildings for architectural portraits. The creek for something more intimate. The forested garden paths that wind between them all. Every part of the property gives you something different, which means the portrait session here never feels repetitive.
The venue hosts one event at a time, which matters more than it sounds. Exclusive use of six acres means your portraits don’t compete with another couple’s reception. The grounds are yours for the day, and you can feel it.

170 Swansea Road, Mount Evelyn VIC 3796. Around 45 minutes east of Melbourne CBD, at the foothills of the Dandenong Ranges.

1909 heritage-listed chapel (80 seated), waterfall with footbridge (20 seated, 60 standing), pergola lawn, or garden terrace (up to 150).
Portrait Spots
The waterfall and footbridge, the log cabin exterior, Olinda Creek, the pergola, the chapel exterior, the forested garden paths, and the fairy-lit outdoor areas at dusk.
Light
The chapel has warm diffused light through timber windows. The gardens and forest are dappled and soft all day. The outdoor fairy lights at dusk make for an entirely different set of portraits after dark.
Season
Works beautifully in every season. The forested gardens give green and texture year round. Autumn brings warm tones. The fairy lights and outdoor areas extend the shooting day well into the evening.

are two of my favourite portrait spots.
I’m Matt. I’ve been photographing weddings since 2014 across Melbourne and the Dandenong Ranges. Chateau Wyuna is the kind of venue that rewards you for exploring it. There’s always another path, another corner of the garden, another piece of heritage architecture you haven’t used yet.
The waterfall ceremony space with its footbridge is an obvious portrait spot, but it’s obvious for good reason: it just works. The log cabin gives you something rustic and warm. Olinda Creek gives you something quiet and natural that couples don’t usually expect to find forty-five minutes from the city. And the fairy lights in the garden at dusk open up a completely different set of portraits after dark.
I shoot mostly documentary style throughout the day. The portrait session at Chateau Wyuna is where I get more deliberate, and the grounds give you enough variety that it never feels like we’re covering the same ground twice.
