10 Must-Ask Questions for Your Wedding Photographer
The things you need to know
10 THINGS YOU NEED TO ASK WHEN TALKING TO WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHERS
Booking a wedding photographer is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make in planning your wedding. But many couples aren’t sure what to ask beyond “How much do you charge?” The right questions help you see beyond the portfolio and into how a photographer will actually handle your day.
Whether you’re planning a vineyard wedding in the Yarra Valley, a luxury ballroom celebration in the heart of Melbourne, or an intimate registry office ceremony, these 10 questions will help you find the right photographer to capture your story.

1. How Would You Describe Your Style of Photography?
Some photographers focus on candid, documentary coverage. Others lean into editorial poses, fine art tones, or cinematic film-inspired aesthetics. Asking this question makes sure their style matches your vision.
My approach is natural, film-inspired, and story-driven. I focus on genuine, candid moments over stiff poses, but I’ll also give subtle direction when needed to make you feel comfortable. The result is photos that feel effortless, honest, and a little cinematic — timeless memories rather than trends.

2. Have You Photographed At Our Venue Before?
Melbourne wedding venues vary from vineyards to city rooftops. A photographer who knows your wedding venue already understands the best portrait locations, how the light changes throughout the day, and the logistics of the space.
I’ve photographed weddings at many of Melbourne and the Yarra Valley’s most iconic venues If I haven’t worked at your exact venue yet, I always scout it beforehand to find the best light and portrait spots.

3. What’s Included In Your Standard Wedding Photography Package?
Wedding photography packages in Melbourne vary widely. Some include just digital images, while others offer albums, second shooters, or engagement sessions. Knowing what’s included helps you compare true value.
My packages are designed to be simple and transparent. They include full-day coverage, a curated online gallery, high-resolution downloads, and sneak peeks within a week. Albums, engagement sessions, and second photographers are available as optional add-ons.

4. How Many Hours Of Wedding Photography Coverage Do We Need?
Too few hours of coverage can leave out important parts of your day. Melbourne weddings often run across multiple locations — prep in the city, ceremony in the gardens, reception in the Yarra Valley — so it’s important to choose a package that captures your whole story.
I don’t do coverage in the traditional sense, rather I focus on covering events. My packages have been designed to fit into your wedding day like a lego block so that you don’t need to worry about cramming your whole wedding into a wedding photography timeline.

5. Do You Also Offer Videography, Or Work With Videographers?
Wedding Photography and video should complement each other. A good Melbourne wedding photographer knows how to work alongside wedding videographers without competing for space or moments.
Yes — I also offer combined photo + video packages. I work alongside one of Melbourne’s best wedding videographers – Tim from Together In Time Films. If you’ve already booked a separate videographer, that’s no problem. I collaborate seamlessly with video teams to make sure your photos and film flow together naturally.

6. Do You Charge Travel Fees?
Some photographers include metro Melbourne in their pricing, while others charge extra outside the CBD. Clarifying travel fees upfront helps you budget.
For me, travel within metro Melbourne is always included. If your wedding outside the city, Yarra Valley, Geelong, or Mornington Peninsula, I’ll always be upfront about any travel costs so there are no surprises.

7. What’s Your Backup Plan If You’re Sick Or Your Equipment Fails On Our Wedding Day?
A professional wedding photographer in Melbourne should have redundancy — both in gear and in people. Weddings are once-in-a-lifetime, so preparation matters.
I shoot with two cameras at all times, each with dual card slots so every photo is backed up instantly. I carry spare equipment (probably more than I’ll ever need – is 6 spare cameras too many?), and I’m part of a trusted Melbourne photography network in case of illness — though I’ve never missed a wedding.

8. How Long Will It Take To Receive Our Photos?
Turnaround times for Melbourne wedding photography vary. Some couples wait months if they don’t ask upfront.
I deliver a sneak peek within a few days of your wedding so you have images to enjoy straight away. Your full gallery will be delivered in 8–12 weeks, depending on the season.

9. Do You Recommend A Second Photographer?
A second photographer adds more coverage but isn’t always necessary. Their recommendation shows whether they’re focused on your needs or upselling.
In most cases I try to cover weddings alone, and in 90% of the weddings I shoot I will be the only photographer. I’ll only recommend a second shooter when it either gives the wedding couple peace of mind or if it ads value to their wedding day.

10. Can We See A Full Wedding Gallery (Not Just Highlights)?
Instagram shows only the highlights. A full gallery reveals how a photographer handles an entire day — from prep to reception.
Absolutely. I believe couples should see complete galleries from real Melbourne weddings, not just a handful of favourites. I’ll happily share full galleries so you can feel confident in my consistency.
